Designations

Knole Park and the surrounding land are of exceptional landscape quality and scientific interest and they have been designated accordingly. The Knole Estate are proud of these designations and work hard to maintain and enhance the protected features.

Heritage exemption

In 2024 the Knole Estate was designated as Conditionally Exempt under S31(1) of the Inheritance Tax Act 1984 on the basis of the exceptional landscape quality of the Knole Estate’s core property.

Ancient woodland

Much of the Woodland within the Knole Estate’s ownership is designated by Natural England as Ancient Woodland.

Site of Special Scientific Interest

Knole Park and much of the surrounding Common Land are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Knole Estate work closely with Natural England to ensure that this area is kept in good condition and to avoid operations that might damage the site.

Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The majority of the core estate falls within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Register of Park and Gardens of Special Historic Interest (Grade 1)

Historic England includes Knole Park in its Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England, with a Grade 1 designation.
